Other Languages

Students studying in the Division may be eligible for scholarships in foreign programs. Please approach the course coordinators for information.

Courses are either mandatory or elective, depending on the requirements of the different faculties and departments. The Division offers courses in: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Yiddish. These full-year courses are offered on two levels, Beginners and Advanced, both composed of two 2-hour classes a week for the entire academic year.

We also offer intensive one-year courses in French, German, and Spanish for students studying toward a post-graduate degree. The courses are intended for students whose department or faculty requires a second foreign language for use as a scientific tool. Students are advised to inquire which languages their individual department accepts as a second foreign language. These intensive courses meet for two sessions per week, for a total of 6 hours.

Post-advanced Courses

These yearly post-advanced level courses are offered in Italian and Yiddish. Please see 'registration' for further information.

Students should follow announcements regarding registration dates. Late registration is not always possible. When registering students must note the department number and the study framework number.

Cancellation: Registration for English courses can be cancelled during the first two weeks of the semester. Registration for language classes can be cancelled during the first four weeks of the first semester of the academic year. After this date, full fees will be charged.

Please note: Students seeking either exemption from language studies or placement in the advanced class based on studies abroad are required to meet with the language studies coordinator to evaluate their proficiency through conversation and other tasks. Students must present original documentation of their studies and prove their knowledge. In lieu, students may choose to take the exemption exam, for a fee of NIS 150, on the scheduled dates.

Placement / Exemption Exams

Placement exams in foreign languages other than English are offered twice a year. The next exams are scheduled for Monday January 30, 2017 and Wednesday October 18, 2017. Please contact the Division office (Webb 205) to register and arrange payment (NIS 150).

Students registered for a language course must take the course exam. The exemption exams are only for students not participating in courses.
