In this work we use phylogenetic and experimental analysis to characterize the divergence patterns of the Rap-Phr system. Specifically, we show that duplications of the Phr signal mediate specificity transitions.

Spatial Regulation in Complex Colonies

We utilize light-activated gene expression techniques to study the impact of spatial hetrogeneity and communication on colony development.

Evolution of Quorum Sensing

Bacteria often impact their environment by means of secreted substances. Secretion is often regulated by specific signals the cells make and respond to in a process called quorum sensing. Both secretion of substances and quorum sensing lead to a density dependent cooperative effects. We study the evolution of quorum sensing and cooperative secretion by combining experimental approaches and modeling.

Evolution and development of complex microbial colonies

Bacteria often form complex colonies, swarms or biofilms when grown on surfaces. These complex communities depend on the secretion of various substances and are characterized by spatially hetrogenous gene expression. We study molecular mechanisms underlying the development and evolution of such complex communities.
